Yep, we're doing it again, and by popular demand, we'll be heading to the Big Easy for the Labor Day weekend. This is, indeed, the third and a half annual workshop--and we'll be welcoming back F. Paul Wilson and Cathy Maxwell, and yes, once again, we'll be looking for a pirate theme on Saturday night. We hope to bring fun, connections, lots of interaction and all good things to everyone who attends, and we also hope to help keep our pinkie-finger in the dyke effort going to preserve one of America's most fascinating and unique cities. Kathy Love and Erin McCarthy will be hosting the welcome party--and getting right on into the Crescent City myth, legend, and spirit with a Zydeco bash. And, come the night, we'll be heading for the river and Helen Rosburg's evening of mischief and mayhem. Time to come on down as Mississippi belles and gamblers for fun and frolic on an old paddleboat. Be daring--dressup for all occasions, and have no fear. This is New Orleans. It's possible no one will notice! Then again, if you're the black dress type, that's lovely, too. Heck, come in your jeans! It is the Big Easy. DR. MAURA ISLES could not decide whether to stay or to flee.

She lingered in the shadows of the Pilgrim Hospital parking lot, well beyond the glare of the klieg lights, beyond the circle of TV cameras. She had no wish to be spotted, and most local reporters would recognize the striking woman whose pale face and bluntly cut black hair had earned her the nickname “Queen of the Dead”. As yet no one had noticed Maura’s arrival, and not a single camera was turned in her direction. Instead, the dozen reporters were fully focused on a white van that had just pulled up at the hospital’s lobby entrance to unload its famous passenger. The van’s rear doors swung open and a lightning storm of camera flashes lit up the night as the celebrity patient was gently lifted out of the van and placed onto a hospital gurney. This patient was a media star whose newfound fame far outshone any mere medical examiner’s. Tonight Maura was merely part of the awestruck audience, drawn here for the same reason the reporters had converged like frenzied groupies outside the hospital on a warm Sunday night.

All were eager to catch a glimpse of Madam X.

Maura had faced reporters many times before, but the rabid hunger of this mob alarmed her. She knew that if some new prey wandered into their field of vision, their attention could shift in an instant, and tonight she was already feeling emotionally bruised and vulnerable. She considered escaping the scrum by turning around and climbing back into her car. But all that awaited her at home was a silent house and perhaps a few too many glasses of wine to keep her company on a night when Daniel Brophy could not. Lately there were far too many such nights, but that was the bargain she had struck by falling in love with him. The heart makes its choices without weighing the consequences. It doesn’t look ahead to the lonely nights that follow.

Subduing her had required all my skill and training. Even the weapon hadn't been enough to make her submit. Not like the others. Not until she'd felt the prick of the blade, sensed drops of her own blood trickling down her neck. At that point she'd quivered, then gone still. She was too smart not to. She wanted to fight. I could see it in her eyes. But she didn't. In the end, I'd won. I injected her with the Nembutal, and in five minutes her eyes went dull and her body went limp.

I had her.

Her warm, drugged body slumped against my shoulder. It felt good. My timing and execution had been perfect. It was Spring break. She wouldn't be missed for days.

"Chick-lit like paranormal with romance thrown in"
Amy Atwood is a witch and not the nice kind. She is the devil worshipping kind of witch who got mixed up with Lucifer aka Luc. Then Amy found her sister in bed with Luc and she turned her back on him for good; Or so she hopes. Going to Witches Anonymous and following the thirteen steps is the best way to go good, but it doesn't look like Luc is about to let her go that easily.

Giving up magic, being normal and human isn't easy but then Amy meets Adam and things start looking up. She owns an Ice-Cream parlour and he loves to eat Ice-Cream, he is a firefighter and she has some fires he can put out for her. Sounds like a perfect match but Luc is still on the sidelines and he is up to something.

Then the angel Gabriel shows his face and Amy learns something about Adam that makes things a bit more biblical. Amy has a decision to make and she doesn't like either of the options. Will she make the right choice?

This was a nice short story that kept me happy to read till the end. The witches anonymous angle was interesting and it would have been nice to have had the story go into more depth about that. The angel and demon angle was also fascinating and I liked the way the author brought it all together without it sounding ridiculous.

Chick-lit like paranormal with romance thrown in is how I would describe this tale. This was a well thought out story that would have surely been a very good full length novel. I would love to see what happened next but I'm not sure if there will be a sequel. Instead I will keep an eye out for something else by this author because her style has quirked my interest.
